As Camp Magic MacGuffin comes to an end, I decided to make a short video including all the amazing stuff that I learned and explored in the past nine weeks. Regardless of the hectic weeks, CMM was never short on excitement and happy times. From daily creates, to weekly assignments, photographs, videos, audios, bunkhouse buddies and everything in between. This video obviously does not do any justice to what CMM has given me. Hope you enjoy this video.
For today’s Daily Create, I was assigned to take a photograph of an animal that best represents my personality. I choose a wild cat. They are not much different from a domestic cat, however wild cats guard their independence. They are creative, curious, and always out and about or observing the world from a distance. During my stay in Africa, I’ve captured a photo of a wildcat. They are beautiful and free-spirited (not saying all that about myself, but I admire that about them). My tour guide told me that a wildcat would never take a conventional route and prefers to explore life from off the beaten track. They rely on their instincts and powers of observation to guide them through life (sounds familiar). They, however, love their privacy.
Everyone tries to stand out but they rather end up conforming to what everyone else is doing.
The video “Everything is a Remix” shows the level of ‘originality’ or lack thereof. In the past years – music, videos, and even movies have become a repetition of others or an extension of a preexisting movie. He further explains how even the most ‘original’ movies of all time are not as original as we think. I agree with this theory. Originality is important, but as he stated in the beginning of the video, maybe we prefer the familiar. This could explain why we are consistent with retelling stories over and over and over again. It makes us feel comfortable.
For explain, disney movies have been told, retold and continue to be made into stories and movies with different twist. There are probably over 200 movies that are an extension of disney stories. So how original is that?
This may not be a bad thing. No. Taking a story and adding your own flavor can transform it into a new and improved version of the old story. There is a difference between being inspired by something and copying something, exactly word for word. I see no harm of constantly improving something that already exists. It’s all a part of life. I look at it like this, two different people can view the same exact thing, differently.
so yeah, mix mix mix – mix it on.
For many years I was interested in learning ASL – American Sign Language. A few months ago I promised myself that I will find classes and teach myself how to sign language. I am not yet fluent, however, I am still learning. In this tutorial video I will teach you a few phrases in ASL. I created this footage on my iPhotos Video, then edited using iMovies. I added subtitles and enhanced the background music (since I was sitting at a coffee shop).
For this assignment I had to chose words (randomly) and do google image search on the words I chose randomly. I selected the first visible photos for the words. Then I created a story by utilizing iMovies.
For this Video assignment, I was supposed to go out into the wilderness and observe nature. I recorded a 30 second video on the beautiful outdoors. I captured this video with my iPhone and uploaded it directly to YouTube. Enjoy!
For my video assignments I choose two assignments I found to be very interesting.
- Return to the Silent Era: Select a trailer or movie segment you can use for this assignment. Outline the things you can add to make it more like silent movie style, or write the text you will use on the screens that display dialogue.
- Vintage Educational Video Assignment: Identify an educational video you could use to create your own; create a script and set of media needs to complete the assignment.
I began my research to make these two assignments happen for next week. I will utilize most programs on my computer and downloaded a few others that I will need to complete these assignments.
For the first assignment “Return to the Silent Era” – I selected a Modern Movie called “She’s the Man” and I will edit the movie to be a black and white silent film. It’s going to be challenging but the idea sounds awesome. I will also have to utilize iMovies to speed up or slow down the tempo of the film when it’s necessary. For the second assignment “Vintage Educational Video Assignment” – I am still searching for an educational video and will make an extended version of it, or even better. I have already created set of media for this assignment.
For this assignment, I had to take components from different movies and mash them up into one. It’s pretty cool. I was able to change anything, the title of the movie, the main image, the caption, etc. To do this assignment I began by browsing through my movies. I choice Along Came Polly with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller. The polt is about an outgoing girl who is fun, spontaneous and afraid of commitment and a man who is too organized and “safe.” He got married and his wife cheated on him on their honeymoon with the tour guide. I captured an image in the movie where he was begging her to stay and be with him. Then I choice the caption and title from the movie called “She is out of your league.” I thought the movies worked well together, because they both represent similar stories. The beautiful spontaneous girl and the too organized, safe guy.
I am the kind of person who chases the sun just to see it set (literally). My life’s goal is to watch the sunset in all seven continents. So far I chased sunsets in four different continents; North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. I decided to make a collage with all the sunset pictures I took from over the years. I used photovisi.com. I uploaded all the pictures and it did the work for me. Seriously, life is so beautiful (when it’s so easy).
A few months back I had the idea to compose a documentary about a topic that has been lingering in my mind for years. The concept of modesty. Modesty comes in many different forms. Everyone has their own perception of modesty. I was particularly interested to view this concept with Islam and how outsiders (non-Muslims) view Muslims who cover their head or dress more conservative. I was inspired to ask everyone on campus about their views on Muslim women (and women in general) wearing the hijab (veil) or dressing more conservative. This video was intended to open people’s eyes to a new and well-informed perspective on this matter. Misconceptions about the veiled women, yet appreciated self-worth and hidden admiration was discovered when interviewing people on college campus. I used iMovies to edit this movie and with the share option I uploaded it directly to YouTube. It got creative with sound effects and added music toward the end of the video to make it a “legitimate” documentary that is worth sharing. After I completed this project I realized there were many editing mistakes I made that I will learn from next time around. Currently I am working on another documentary that should be done soon (stay toned).
